Benefits of FOCA Membership - December 2017
When the question was raised at the 2017 AGM about the benefits of FOCA to our SDRA membership, your SDRA Board realized we could do a better job of communicating to our members specifically how their $3.88 per membership benefits our association.
As you may recall, the four strategic pillars of our Skootamatta District Ratepayers Association are FUN, ADVOCACY, COMMUNICATION AND EDUCATION (F-A-C-E).
- FUN: FOCA provides many tips and tools such as the Menu of Engagement Activities for Lake Associations that as members of FOCA we would not have access to. This menu provides ideas for community events, association meetings, and environmental programs as well as creative member communication ideas.
- ADVOCACY: As part of a broader association such as FOCA, the SDRA has greater power as a collective voice alongside other lake associations. FOCA represents over 500 associations and is able to speak up where individual associations cannot.
- COMMUNICATION: FOCA provides key alerts called e-lerts to over 10,000 subscribers on topics of concern for cottagers across Ontario. These e-lerts keep your SDRA board informed so they can in turn pass this information on to you. Also, as members of FOCA, individual members may also sign up for these e-lerts. Reduced subscription rates are also available through FOCA membership for publications such as Cottage Life magazine.
- EDUCATION: FOCA provides the SDRA board with resources and tools to educate our members about Lake Stewardship, Invasive Species and Climate Change, Cottage Succession Planning, new legislation impacting Cottage Associations and much more. Guest speakers at the FOCA Fall sessions and Spring AGM’s feature key topics to educate representatives from lake associations across Ontario. Resources from these sessions help the SDRA Board to educate their members and bring those resources and information to the SDRA AGM. Our Lake Management Plan Committee has taken advantage of the LMP templates provided by FOCA.
If you take a tour of the FOCA website, you will see right away how active they are in many common areas of concern for the Ontario Cottage Association community and how many resources are available to member associations through FOCA.
SDRA members in good standing can access all of FOCA’s membership benefits, including the boat and cottage insurance program CottageFirst, a 30% discount off online purchases of Coleman Canada products(!) and all other offers listed on FOCA's Benefits webpage where information is updated as soon as it becomes available.
We hope this article has helped our members to understand how our FOCA membership delivers value to the SDRA.
